Privacy Policy

What this site collects, why, and what you can do about it.

The short version

This site does not ask you for personal information, does not run a mailing list, and does not have accounts to log in to. It measures visits with two analytics tools, one of which (Google Analytics) sets cookies, and it links out to two booking sites without earning anything from them. That is the whole of it.

Analytics

Visits are measured with Google Analytics, run by Google. It sets first-party cookies (named _ga and _ga_ followed by an ID) that let it tell new visitors from returning ones, and it records the pages viewed, how long they were viewed, the referring site, the approximate location (country and city, derived from your IP address, which Google Analytics does not store), and the general type of device and browser. This site uses it only to see which guides are read and how people find them; it is not linked to advertising and is not used to identify anyone. Google’s own use of the data is described in its privacy policy, and you can opt out with Google’s browser add-on.

Visits are also counted with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which records the page viewed, the approximate country, the referring site and the general type of device and browser. It sets no cookies and does not fingerprint your device.

Loading a page therefore makes requests to Google’s and Cloudflare’s servers for the measurement scripts. If you would rather it did not, you can block cookies in your browser or use any tracker blocker, and the site works exactly the same without them.

Links to tickets, tours and accommodation are in some cases affiliate links to GetYourGuide and Booking.com. Following one takes you to that company's own site, where their privacy policy and cookies apply, not this one's. If you then book, this site is credited with the referral. The price you pay is unchanged. No affiliate tracking is active at present, so following one of these links currently credits nobody.

Every photograph on this site is downloaded, resized and served from this domain. Nothing is hotlinked, so viewing a page sends no request to Pexels, to Wikimedia Commons or to anyone else who might otherwise see that you were here. The photographs come from Pexels and from Wikimedia Commons under their respective licences, and every one is credited by name on the credits page.

Your rights

Under UK and EU data protection law you have the right to ask what personal data an organisation holds about you, to have it corrected, and to have it erased. This site itself holds no personal data about visitors; analytics data is held by Google and Cloudflare as described above. For any request, write to [email protected] and it will be dealt with.
